St. Henry´s Ecumenical Art Chapel, architectural photographs by Tapio Koivula

St. Henry´s Ecumenical Art Chapel, Turku, 2017

At the heart of Tapio Koivula’s work lies architecture and its profound impact on human experience and identity. Through the medium of photographic art, Koivula explores how architecture and the built environment can mirror both personal and collective emotions and memories. In his photographs, architecture transcends its physical form, becoming a reflective surface for the complexities of human psyche and emotion. Koivula employs soft focus and the dynamic interplay of light to create a gentle, almost dreamlike atmosphere in his images. This invites the viewer to embark on a deeper exploration of space and emotion.

His works present architectural spaces as both concrete locations and abstract mental landscapes. Each photograph becomes a window into a realm where light and shadow converge, creating room for personal interpretation and emotional engagement. The intentional softness leaves space for imagination, encouraging viewers to envision how the spaces might appear or feel. Koivula’s works pose compelling questions: How do architecture and the built environment shape our identities? Can a space simultaneously offer safety and present a challenge?

In Koivula’s photographs, architecture transforms into a visual inquiry, where spaces are not merely physical structures but bridges between past and present, material and spiritual. The layered compositions and the dialogue between light and shadow guide viewers on a journey into the sensory essence of architecture and the inner meanings of space. Threads of light and the depth of shadows construct spaces imbued with layers of history and memory, while also inviting viewers to step into their own experiential worlds. In doing so, architectural forms and spaces become an integral part of the inner human landscape, where each photograph reveals a unique perspective on the interplay between architecture and emotion.

Tapio Koivula is a Tampere-based photographer, recognized with the Qualified European Photographer (QEP) distinction. His work is characterized by a mastery of light and shadow, meticulous composition, and an ability to capture the aesthetic and timeless essence of architecture, inspiring viewers to experience and interpret space in new ways.

This exhibition is supported by the Kansan Sivistysrahasto.
